DC United…what now?

As some have heard at this point, Josh Wicks is going to be out 4-6 weeks because of a dislocated shoulder and torn MCL. Milos Kocic is the next in line for goalkeeper. Bill Hamid is not available for league matches, only CONCACAF Champions League.

With Kocic in goal, how does DC work with this? Namoff is still out due to a concussion and I wouldn’t be surprised if he will be out to the end of the season. DC needs to find a defense system that works (and Clyde Simms needs to stay out of the back line and stay at defensive midfield). Is this the time for the youth to step up? I think so. The veterans are showing that their time has come and gone (minus Christian Gomez who can still play the #10 role). At this point I would play Ben Olsen, Jaime Moreno, and Luciano Emilio all as 45 minute players. I would even rope Fred into that.

United has the youth coming in that have the ability it play the roles. During the Marathon match, you saw the connection that Emilio and Pontius played very well setting each other up (and why they were not played in this same way for the San Jose match has me very confused). Both Wallace and Pontius are front runners for Rookie of the Year. But it is hard for these guys to play with their speed when the veterans they are playing with can not keep up with their pace. I have been pleading this for a moth or so and hopefully the team will get the idea.

Tom Soehn. Since Peter Nowak left the team, Tom Soehn has slowly brought this team down. True, his first 2 seasons the team won the Supporter’s Shield. But the team also goes out in the first round of the playoffs. I think Soehn’s time has come and gone. The guys over at UnitedMania.com have thrown out the idea of Richie Williams, interim head coach at New York. Williams is a former DC United player (and, hey, even a former Richmond Kicker). I think, as of right now, this would be a great move (because anyone who can win with New York should be looked at). I would be surprised if there were not a lot of changes this off season.
